SDPD Officer Bruce Byrd Involved In San Marcos Collision

SAN DIEGO -- A San Diego police officer was rushed to Palomar Hospital shortly after 6:00 a.m. Wednesday after a San Marcos resident called 911 to report him lying on the road injured, authorities said. 
The motorcycle officer, identified as 47-year-old Officer Bruce Byrd, was apparently involved in a crash with another vehicle near West Borden Road and Palo Alto Court, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. Authorities said Byrd was on his way to work when the crash happened. 
As Byrd approached the intersection, a woman driving a 2000 Honda Civic northbound on Palo Alto Court turned left onto westbound Borden Road in front of Byrd's motorcycle, said sheriff's Sgt. Stephanie Guerra. 

The motorcycle struck the driver's side of the Civic, and Byrd suffered a dislocated hip, fractured leg, hand injury and laceration to his head, authorities said. 
The driver of the Civic, identified as 27-year-old Escondido resident Cynthia Kusimoto, did not appear to be injured, according to the authorities 
The sheriff's department, which is investigating the accident, said Kusimoto was leaving her boyfriend's house when the crash occurred. She told authorities she didn't see the motorcycle. She was visibly upset and people who know her said she feels terrible about what happened. 
"She's someone who's actually very cautious as to how she drives, and for this to happen to her, I say they really need to put something in there," said friend Cesy Cruz. 
Cruz and other neighbors said there have been several accidents at the intersection in the last few years. They believe it needs a stoplight. 
"It's downhill, people drive over 50 [mph]; it just happens," said resident Alex Sanchez. 
Kusimoto went to the hospital for the treatment of facial cuts. 
Investigators on the scene said she was cited for not having proof of insurance. 
SDPD officials said Byrd has been a police officer since 1991 and is married with two children. 
"Anytime a police officer whether it's our agency or another is inured, it hits home with anyone in the law enforcement family and we take that very seriously," said SDPD Lt. Andra Brown
